The Air Cadet Organization (ACO) is a national youth organization for young men and women aged between 13-18. It is also a registered charity.

   The ACO comprises two sections - the Air Training Corps (ATC) and the Combined Cadet Force (RAF). The ATC was established on the 5th of February 1941 and has over 900 squadrons into 36 wings which then split into six regions.  79 (Whitchurch) Sqn is part of West Mercian Wing which is part of Wales and West Region both of which are situated at DCEA Cosford. 

 The CCF (RAF) was established in 1948 and its sections are located in 198 state and independant schools accross the United Kingdom and only open to pupils of the school.

  • Are you up for a challenge?

    The squadron is currently looking to recruit additional adult volunteers.  Without them the cadets are severely restricted in the opportunities they can take part in.  We are looking for adults over 20 who can volunteer just a few hours a month to help the cadets put something back into the community.  If you are interested in helping us out then contact the Sqn on 01948 666886 Tuesdays or Fridays 19:30 -21:30 hours or come to the office to discuss.


  • Air Cadets Flying High

    The cadets of 79 (Whitchurch) Sqn know the sky is the limit and are learning how to fly a glider.  Cadet Corporal Alex Black (pictured)has recently qualified to wear her 'Gold' Advanced Glider Training (AGT) Wings while being a Staff Cadet at 663 Volunteer Gliding Squadron (VGS) at RAF Cosford.  Cpl Black can now train as a civilian gliding instructor and help her pursue a career in aviation.  Cadet Corporal Sam Ellis was recently awarded his 'Sliver' Gliding Scholarship (GS) Wings by taking control of the glider and completing a solo sortie at 632 VGS RAF Ternhill.  Cpl Ellis is hoping to embark on his AGT course soon so he too can follow a career in aviation.  More high flyers include Cadet Corporals Joe Cole and Tom Forster both of whom were awarded their 'Blue' GS Wings and are hoping to progress to Silver wings later this year.  Well done to them all!

    The ATC offers cadets the opportunity to learn the basic skills for flying with Gliding Scholarships.  Cadets who take up a scholarship are trained how to fly ove the course of several weekends or occasionally at a week long camp. 


  • Super 10 for Niki

    Cadet Niki Workman is a Super cadet and it is official.  Niki has represented West Mercian Wing at various sports 10 times including netball, athletics and football and was awarded her 'Super 10' by Sqn Ldr Feast when she represented the Wing at the Inter Wing Hockey competition in April.  Cdt Workman had also represented the Region on three occassions.


  • Farewell Cobber

    The Squadron said farewell to Squadron Welfare Committee Chairman Nick Trudgett and a special presentation evening.  Nick, who held the post for three years and helped raise several thousand pounds for the squadron, stood down having taken a position in Australia with his company.  To remember his time with the Squadron he was presented with a Squadron Plaque by OC Flt Lt Patrick Collins.  We wish Nick and his family good luck and success in their new adventure in Oz.


  • Hot shots

    Two Whitchurch Air Cadets proved they have a keen eye for markmanship.  Cadet Corporal Sam Ellis and Cadet Duncan Sokolowski both earned the Squadron Marksmanship badges at a recent range day.  The highly disciplined skill is available to all cadets who undergo rigorous training by qualified instructors before they go on a range.


  • Hot Shots Part Deux

    Cadet Sergeant Bryony Chester and Cadet Corporal John Wright have awarded their 'Basic Coaching' ticket for marksmanship coaching.  They attended a weekend long course at the RAF Regiment Flight at RAF Cosford and are now looking forward to coaching the squadron marksmanship team.


  • ATC Sunday Church Parade

    Whitchurch Air Cadets celebrated the 70th Anniversary of the Air Training Corps with a dedication services at Tilstock church.  The service was led by Sqaudron Padre Rev Sue Armstrong and included a reading by Cdt Lewis Black. This was follwed by tea and sandwiches at Tilstock Village Hall.
